DmC Rant

So I’m writing this rant purely for the sake of ranting. It is not particularly well organised or written, and it is about something that about 98% of you that are friends with me won’t care about, if that little. So if you’re not interested in hearing my opinion about all the DmC hating, please feel free to scroll right on past.

We good?

Okay, so. I haven’t been a fan of Devil May Cry for very long, and that is probably why I am not “getting” what’s going on (then again, “not being a fan for long enough” seems to be the general reason why my opinions are always “wrong”). But, I am really sick of the hating on DmC.

One, because the game isn’t even out yet. What is the point of dissing a game which you haven’t played? There IS no point. You’re just making judgements based off what you see, which is a stupid thing to do because you don’t know a thing about what’s going on in the game. Shut up and wait until it’s out and play it before you make a decision about whether or not it’s a good game. Stop making comments about how it looks boring or slow. You don’t know that, you are not playing it. What you see in trailers does not define the playing experience.

And what you see is point two. Someone please explain to me why one of these is horrible and an abomination and unworthy compared to the other.

No, really. I need someone to explain this to me. The one on the left is the “new” Dante for DmC. The one on the right is “classic” Dante from Devil May Cry 2.

So why does “new” Dante not deserve to exist? Because he has black short hair and red eyes instead of white hair and blue eyes (which, by the way, his colours change to in DmC)? His clothes are different? He’s wearing a shirt in one and not in the other? “New” Dante is a bit younger than we’re used to seeing? Because as far as I can tell, the personalities are basically the same. Cocky, rude, arrogant, sarcastic and joking… and his face and body build are the same, so it’s really only the clothes and colours that are different. I guess new Dante’s weapons design is slightly different too, but why the frell should that matter. So why is black Dante terrible?

I don’t get it. I think this reaction to the newer model of Dante is stupid. Everyone just went with the knee-jerk reaction of “Oh, this is different, it can’t be Devil May Cry” and “Wow have they ruined it”, and they are sticking with it for some sad reason. Why is it? I guess I’m missing something.

And what I’m not missing is the fact that new Dante is not related to the old model of Dante in the least. DmC is not a prequel to Devil May Cry. It is its own little game in its own little world and it has no effect on the former series. Did everyone else miss that? It’s okay for things to be a little different in an AU.

I guess another reason is three: Dante is supposedly now half-demon and half-angel for DmC, as opposed to the older model of half-demon half-human. Again: why is this a bad thing when DmC is unrelated to the Devil May Cry continuum? I personally think that is an interesting twist and certainly more serving to Dante’s moral dilemma than the half-human approach, and better related to the overarching theme. And it will probably fit into DmC perfectly well since we don’t know exactly what’s going on yet.

And guys, Dante is far from angelic. Look at the guy. He is a rough and tumble boy, drinking and smoking, picking fights, apparently a “sexual deviant”. Why should anyone care if he is half-angel? You will never know. So why are you complaining if the only things I can see so far that even hint at the fact that his mother plays harps and has white wings are the fact that he can fly/glide short distances and “angel lift” points that help you jump from place to place (notably, these are not new features, just a new name for it)? Are you really going to play the whole game grumbling to yourself “He’s half-angel, this is terrible!”?

Let it go. It is a new thing for a new idea. It is not going to hurt the Devil May Cry you grew up with and love. It’s simply not. Just drop it.

And you know what makes me laugh about this response? Is that in his normal human/possibly “angel” mode he has black hair and red eyes, which are colours one would associate with hell and demons… but once he enters the demon realm/mode/state/whatever you want to call it, his hair is white and his eyes are blue, which are colours of purity and divinity.

Your arguments about the demon/angel thing are completely invalid.

Four, I hear that they have destroyed the franchise with this. No they have not. You can’t say that before the game is out and before reviews of people that have actually played the game, thank you, are in. Again, DmC is not part of the normal Devil May Cry universe. It is a reboot and meant to be part of a different universe. It’s an update, a new and modern take. You can’t say it’s destroyed the franchise when it has very little to do with the franchise, aside from using the basic ideas. It’s not called Devil May Cry 5, despite what sites write it out to be. It’s not. It’s DmC: Devil May Cry. You see how they’re not slapping a number on there and passing it off as a continuation of the other Devil May Cry games? Stop saying they are.

What’s wrong with trying something new? You have to update or the newer generation won’t take interest. If I were ten years younger and growing up in this age, to be honest I probably wouldn’t take interest in Devil May Cry Dante and his story. It’s too old-fashioned and overwrought. Luckily I am old enough to appreciate the romanticism of the old games set among ruins of cathedrals and worship sites. I don’t think many kids these days, with all the games like Halo, Call of Duty, etc. would appreciate something like that. So DmC takes the old romantic notion of a protagonist that’s torn between two ancient religious sides and sticks him in a modern place with modern problems. That’s something kids are more likely to hang on to, I think.

And, the new setting is less religiously-charged. That is something that is becoming increasingly attractive to kids and adults of the modern era. Yes, there are the influences of the heaven versus hell thing, but overall that seems relatively mute. It’s a take-on-the-demons-save-the-world type game without shoving the salvation of mankind in your face. It’s a step away from the older universe, yes, but for the fiftieth time: this game is not part of the old universe.

Nothing wrong with trying to give it a new spin. I think Dante’s character and background is perfectly flexible. An update into a modern realm is not going to do him any harm. So drop the complaints about it. It can still be an amazing game regardless.

Five, it’s done by a new production company who doesn’t know what they’re doing. I’ll give you one point because yes, it is being developed by an outside company. But you don’t get a second point because they know what they are doing. Capcom is heavily involved with the development of this game. They asked Ninja Theory to do the development for a reboot that was already planned. They were going to do a reboot anyway. They liked Ninja Theory’s other games and thought maybe new blood would be a good idea. Who better to do a reboot than a newer group who like the old games just fine?

And guys, Capcom wouldn’t have allowed DmC to come this far if they hadn’t liked the idea enough. Maybe the original franchise creator doesn’t like him much, but it seems that he doesn’t like anything he worked on in the past anyway. But the company that put out four well-received Devil May Cry games certainly know what they’re doing. Does anyone really believe that they are trying to make it fail? It’s not as if they’re new to DMC games either.

So please, drop that point too. You don’t have any idea what they are doing because you haven’t played the effing game yet. Ninja Theory has made games that are critically acclaimed and they have won awards. They obviously are good. Just sit back and let them do their job, please.

I honestly just don’t get why everyone is whining about the way the game looks when basically no one has even played it yet. I myself know several people who were meh about the older games but are really looking forward to this one. I’ve only played DMC 1 and 4 but I loved them, and I am really excited about this game. Why is it that people complain when too much of the same thing is done, but they scream and rail in anger when someone does something a bit new?

Extremists, please just sit down. You’re not impressing anyone and you are just making yourselves look even more stupid with your actions, including your death threats to the developers of the game. What do you think you are accomplishing? Nothing. That is just simply pathetic, and that is the reason no one will take video games or those who play them seriously. (This is actually true of any fandom.) Going to this extreme is sad and horrifically embarrassing. At least the people whose lives you are threatening (in jest or in earnest) are laughing it off.

If you don’t want to play the game, don’t play the game. You aren’t stopping it from going forward, obviously. But if you want your opinion to have some weight, you need to shut up, wait for the game to be released, and play it with a clear mind. I know I can’t ask you to be unbiased. But you can at least give DmC a try. Then your opinion can be valid. Until then, you’re just a paranoid kid in a restaurant that screams his head off because he thinks the waiter messed up his order of smiley-face chocolate chip pancakes due to the pancakes not looking exactly like they do on the menu despite the disclaimer that things may appear different from what’s pictured.

And you know how much you hate those kids, or adults.

That is all.

I think you are absolutely right. Even though I will always love "old" Dante, the new game has a lot of potential. I think that a lot of people are whining because it's not "old" Dante and that fact that they are still attached to him makes it worse. I personally am willing to give the game a try, but the old games will forever remain in my heart. It's always good to play the game first. But as usually society is filled with close minded people that love to reject everything that isn't familiar to then to them . It's just the way we are as humans. We just have to stay clam and wait for this storm to be over. Haters will be haters, but that happens with every fandom. As long as we stick to our ideals, we should be alright.
